Marshmallow World (Darlene Love)

This is the first of a series of songs by extraodinarily credible artists. Darlene Love is a great singer, a legend, as they say, of Rock ‘N’ Roll. She was the uncredited lead vocalist on the Crystals’ records and many other Phil Spector productions. Her recording of “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) is the highlight of Phil Spector’s essential album “A Christmas Gift for You.” Personally, my Christmas season is not complete without seeing her perform “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” on “Late Night with David Letterman.” Count me among those who consider this the best Rock ‘N’ Roll Christmas recording.

But as George L. points out, “Marshmallow World” is quite a different matter. George L. calls it a “song with a sticky white subtext.” The track starts with a sort of classical string intro that segues into a tick tack piano riff before plunging headlong into a wall of sound treatment that is almost self-parodying. Yet George L. finishes, “I have to sneak a listen each year.”

Sneak a listen if you must but tune in to Letterman on December 22.
